Purple Haze tutorial in Photoshop
This tutorial will teach us on -
- To create a custom brush in photoshop
- To play around with layer blending mode
- And of course to ultimately create 'Purple Haze'
Let's follow the steps below to create Purple Haze effect in Photoshop
- Open a new Photoshop file of 700px x 700px dimension with gray background.
- Create a new layer. Choose Elipse tool (U) from tool bar and draw a black circle of 50% opacity.

- With this circle selected, go to ‘Layer > Layer Styles > Blending Mode’ from main menu.
- Select ‘Overlay’ as blending mode and ‘50% opacity’.

- For Stroke – ‘Size 10’, Position – ‘Outside’ and Color – ‘Black’. Finally click on ‘OK’ button.

- Select this particular shape from ‘Layer' window and go to ‘Edit > Define Brush Preset’ and save.

- Now delete this ‘Brush Stroke’.
- Create a new layer and select ‘Color’ from ‘Layer’ Window.
- To fill color to this layer, go to ‘Layer > Layer Styles > Gradient Overlay.

- Select ‘Overlay’ as Blending Mode, Linear gradient fill with black, purple and black as colors for linear gradient fill.

- Now go back to your ‘Layer’ window. Create a folder and select ‘Color Dodge’ (blending mode).
- Under this folder, create a new layer.
- Now select brush tool from tool box and open ‘brushes’ window. Follow instruction and change settings based on screenshots provided below
- Draw vertical lines beside each other and the final result is as shown below.
