Photoshop tutorial for Gradient fill effect on photographs

This tutorial will help teach you on how to create a subtle gradient fill to photographs. This method can be used to give vintage / retro effect to photographs or just make your plain photograph more interesting.

Final Effect

Please follow the steps below to create this effect.
  • Open your photograph in photoshop. Save as a new file so that you do not loose your original photograph

  • Click on circular fourth icon on the base of 'Layer' window and select 'Hue / Saturation' from the drop-down

  • Select 'colorize' check box in the adjustment window and give an hue to the picture as shown below

  • Give 'Overlay' effect to this 'Hue/Saturation' layer
  • Create a new layer above this 'Hue/Saturation' layer and create a  vector image with any gradient you like, the vector image gradient fill I have created is shown below

  • Give 'Overlay' effect to this gradient vector image layer with low opacity of around 36%.

Now!, as you can see, your effect is complete.

If you wish to create 'Retro' effect, you can probably try vector gradient fill which is more towards 'orange' / 'red' / 'yellow'. As you know, its all about just playing around until you get what you want.
